I joined the team in November 2019, fresh out of college, to help tackle a pressing challenge: the lack of high-quality data hindering the development of infrastructure projects in emerging economies. TfC's mission is to bring a data-driven approach to the development of informal transit systems across Africa. I was part of a team that developed a unique set of tools to collect, visualize, and process geographical data; battle-tested in some of Africa's densest urban environments.

As a key member of the team, I focused on UX design and frontend development, driving the creation of four geospatial applications under the unified RouteLab Design System. One of my notable projects was developing a vehicle detection and tracking system, which involved collecting and cleaning a large vehicle dataset, training a custom image classifier, and deploying it to a scalable micro-service architecture. I also accelerated the data validation process by 40% with a web-based geoprocessing tool, leveraging GPU power to process hundreds of thousands of geographic data points simultaneously. Along the way we created many data-rich interactive dashboards to enhance the project monitoring process for data collection projects.

The impact of our work was significant. RouteLab improved data accuracy, speed, and quality, reducing traditional data collection costs by 75%. This made it the go-to tool for large-scale data collection efforts by major organizations like the World Bank, AFD, GIZ, and the World Resources Institute. I'm proud to have played a key role in shaping the product and driving its success.

Bishoy combines solid technical knowledge, an eye for good design, and a remarkable organizational capacity. Working alongside him and under his leadership on multiple projects, I've seen him exercise these qualities on technical and non-technical fronts, guiding and supporting the team, while staying focused and goal-driven. On many occasions, I've seen him very skillfully manage and align the visions of different stakeholders, always prioritizing clear communication, promptly identifying and clearing any ambiguities.

The journey began in June 2020, when my brother-in-law, a dentist, struggled to find a practice management solution that met his needs. The market had one viable option at the time, which was under-maintained and feature-sparse. Competitors also seemed to quickly lose the willpower or resources to build an alternative. As such he decided the only way a solution was going to exist was if he built it himself. I joined him on this mission and over the course of 15 months we transformed his idea into a reality, launching our beta in August 2021.

My focus was on crafting a user-centered journey that streamlined different workflows based the user's role. I championed an innovative approach that separated tasks, allowing doctors to focus on patient care while administrative staff handled logistics.

Bishoy was a real blessing to our team. His natural sense for the business needs, and ability to translate that to a design vision, allowed us to develop a user flow that was truly disruptive.

At Toptal, I've had the pleasure of collaborating with clients from all over the world. My longest running contract is with Flowly, a virtual clinic helping patients manage chronic pain & anxiety from the comfort of their home. I joined them in October of 2021 as a frontend engineer to overhaul the product checkout process and build a customer experience portal, used internally, to better support their users. Since then my responsibilities expanded to include a full range of both backend and frontend tasks. We implemented integrations with Stripe, Shipstation, and Twilio to provide various customer support functions.

Notable accomplishments include upgrading AWS Amplify and nearly 100 Lambda functions to meet SOC 2 requirements to acquire SOC 2 Type 1 certification; reducing helpdesk response times by 50% with a two-way SMS chat module; and contributing to a 10% increase in customer acquisition through multiple secondary checkout flows for gifting, tiered users, and enterprise customers.

Other clients have hired me for various data visualization experience & expertise working with maps.

Bishoy is extremely organized and diligent which makes meetings and communication super efficient. He started off working on a frontend portal, but his role quickly grew to encompass a wide range of backend work as well. He's a quick learner and doesn't just complete the work assigned to him but actively thinks about how to improve things. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Let's build a better future, together

I am currently available for hire as an independent contractor.

I can only take on a limited number of projects each year. For this reason, I choose to work exclusively with companies that share my passion for building tech that aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

If that sounds like you, let's talk!
